1,034 Run Rudolph's Ramble 5M

It was chilly, snowy and windy on Sunday, perfect weather for Rudolph Ramblers in downtown Chicago. This was not a day for fast times, even by fast runners. Men's winner in the 5-mile race was Emil Bojanov, 26, of Chicago, in 28:59.2. Ladies honors went to well-known Columba Montes, 31, of Chicago, in 32:01.7. Second and third men were Steven Bugarin, 25, of Chicago, who ran 29:09.7, and Shawn Romery, 25, of Evanston, in 29:12.5. Second and third women were Christina Overbeck, 24, of Chicago, in 32:16.0, and Samantha Kirkham-Iteld, 35, of Hinsdale, in 33:10.5. If you ran, how were the conditions? There were 1,034 finishers.

it was really windy going out and everything was slippery, but it ended up being a great "race." no need to worry about time or splits, jut needed to beat the person next to, in front of, or just behind you. the organizers really did a good job of explaining what was going on, getting everyone ready, and keeping the path clear the best they could.

I also think the modified course was slightly longer than the 8k. Not that I minded, but per a Google mapping of the course, it was approximately 5.2 miles or 8.36 km. Overall, thanks to the organizers for a great race under extreme conditions.

I went running by the lake on Sunday morning and I saw a few abandoned/blown over mile marker signs, which were likely from the original course layout. Running to the north was extremely difficult that morning due to the strong wind gusts. Hard to believe that they got so many finishers, but there are obviously quite a few die-hards out there. I wonder what the # of registered vs. # of finishers was?

anon- yes, they were saying before the race started that it was closer to 5 miles, and basically wanted to get it as close as they could on the short timing. i wouldn't mind it if they changed to that course perminantly. it was fine.

pete- i saw bib numbers close to 2,200, so they probably didnt even get half the registrants showing up.

Slightly less than a 50% turnout on that brutal of a day is still pretty good. I don't imagine many people stayed around for the post-race party!
